A Mother’s Thoughts

Mothers raising children have brains.  You would know that if they could put down their laundry basket, take the Lego out of their left hand, and hear themselves think above Hungry, Hungry Hippos.  The kind of self-starting management it takes to run a home allows for little time to write down thoughts.  However, when I was doing the job, I kept a little note pad and when something played around in my head long enough to let me stack the dishwasher and get at least one child out of the backyard and onto homework, I would write those thoughts down.  Here, for the first time, is what a mother thinks:

Woman writing a letter, with her maid, by Johannes Vermeer.

1. The size of the temptation does not negate the sin.

2. Have the courage to say, “Let me think about that and get back to you.”  Then, think about it.

3. Any fool who says, “Do you work?” to a housewife deserves the low esteem in which she will hold them.

4. PAY ATTENTION!  We are not going to give you another life just because you missed this one.

5. It is divine plan that half of mankind is always asleep.

6. A body without its spirit cannot be made to walk upright or even to stand.  It is our divine spirit that lifts us to our feet.

7. The road to accomplishment is named Sacrifice.  When you want to do something, always ask, “Am I ready to sacrifice for this?”

8. Children are like homing pigeons.  Teach them where home is because you will eventually have to throw them out the window.

9. You can always feel sorry for yourself tomorrow.  Right now, the bathroom needs cleaning.

10. A king with his eyes closed has no bigger bedroom than you do.

11.  Life is not a golden chain of joy.  It is pearls of joy formed over grains of experience.

12. It takes twenty minutes for the sun to rise or set and twenty minutes for our eyes to adjust from changing light.  Do you see a plan?

13. If someone would leave you because you told them the truth, let them go.  Good souls absorb truth and bad souls can use a long walk.

14. God rules—90% of all worry comes from not remembering that.

15. There are no secrets, assume all is known.

16. A thought in two parts:  If you don’t do God’s will God’s way, you didn’t do His will at all. Your mother feels the same way.

17. God does not thunder, He reasons.  That is why He is so often overlooked.

18. Choose your battles carefully—each bee gets only one stinger and using it kills him.

19. It is not how you make people feel about you that is important; It is how you are making them feel about themselves.

20. Hear the other side—talking only tells you what you already know.

21. The only reason the magician can pull a rabbit out of his hat is that he first put one in there.

22. Women who raise their children with time, care, advice, discipline and God rule the world.  So do the women who don’t.

23. Don’t do anything God would have drowned Noah for.

24. Sex is God’s wedding present; He doesn’t give blenders.

25. Die busy.

There are others, but these show what dirty diapers and endless dinners to prepare can bring out. May your own thoughts bring peace and calm to your soul.
